GEOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS

Immediately downstream from part of the Weingarten and located on a topographic promontory plateau area, the Rorschwihr Kappelweg is installed on the oldest Quaternary colluviums in the Rorschwihr sector. Ceux-ci reposent ainsi plus ou moins directement sur un substrotum profond de marnes calcaires gris-bleu du Tertiaire (Rupélien). The quaternary arilo-marly brown colluviums contain numerous limestone and siliceous rock fragments from the hinterland: sandstone from the Vosges, silicified Muschelkalk, ferruginous limestones from Lias, oolitic limestone pebbles from the Dogger. At the slightly depressed northern end, the colluvial matrix is a brown plastic clay with a sandy-gravelly fraction with siliceous elements (more widespread in the Moenchreben of Rorschwihr). On the west side, the colluvium from the tertiary conglomerate somewhat covers the land described above.

This geological overview is taken from a private study carried out by the INSTITUT DE GEOLOGIE DE UNIVERSITE LOUIS PASTEUR DE STRASBOURG (Claude SITTLER and Robin THIRION) at a scale of 1: 5000 on behalf of DOMAINE ROLLY-GASSMANN.

ABOUT THE PLACE-DIT

This locality has been claimed and enhanced by the Convent of Moyenmoutier (8th to 18th century), the Abbey of Ebersmunster, the Benedictines of Cluny (911-1245). Note that over the centuries, the delimitation of the Kappelweg has always tended towards restriction rather than extension. At its origins, it consists of the Kappelweg itself and the Weingarten. Today, it is still, in part (for a wing), still surrounded by a wall dating from the 12th century (erected by the executioners of the Meyerhof sentences) which fixed its limits before the invasion of the Hundred War years. In 1348, it is mentioned for its particularity by the Silo of Sélestat. In 1476, Charles-le-Téméraire levied a new tax there. Nowadays, this “Chemin de la Chapelle” (textual translation) is distinguished by the marriage of the complexity and the elegance of its wines and in particular its Riesling, Gewurztraminer and other Muscat. Completely anecdotally, it should be noted that it was already mentioned under the heading “Grand-Cru” even before the 1975 delimitation (see the 300 harvest declarations of Rorschwihr which mention the 12 localities. It should be noted that Rorschwihr has only 5 handlers, 2 of whom do not have vines in the 12 localities of the Municipality, the other winegrowers being either cooperators or grape sellers.

CLIMATE / LANDSCAPE DESCRIPTION

This sedimentary soil, native to the seabed, has the property of accumulating heat from the first rays of the sun and returning it during the night and throughout the late season. These thermal concepts specific to this wine influence the local fauna in terms of the precocity of births (hares and birds, between 10 and 15 days in advance of the rest of the village). On this terroir, the vines brood later, and very quickly made up for the 5 days delay to find the beginning of flowering among the earliest in the village. This mid-slope terroir, forming a false plateau in the middle of the extension of the hillock descending into the Rhine plain, is located between the Moenchreben and the Weingarten and allows for feminine wines of remarkable elegance. They regularly benefit from the foehn effect and are not influenced by the northerly winds which are whirling due to the situation and the opening of the landscape to 360 °.

The fertility and natural generosity of this soil promotes the full maturity of the grape seeds in hot and cold years as well as a reasoned growth of the plant, which allows the natural development of botrytis cineria. This concentration and natural richness harmonizes remarkably well with very nice acidities which remain stable over time and give an incredible youth to the wine.
