Our terroirs / the genesis of geology

Discover our terroirs

Our operation is carried out on the lands of the communes of Rorschwihr, Bergheim and Rodern. Coveted by many abbeys, monasteries and kings of France Merovingians and Carolingians between the years 700 and 1700 and by the popes between the years 1000 and 1400 these lands have many peculiarities.

12 vintages of great diversity – 21 types of subsoils

For many years, successive geological upheavals have shaped in the commune of Rorschwihr nearly 21 different types of subsoil. In particular, there are subsoils predominantly made of limestone, marl and clay. Primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary soils combine here to form a predominantly clay-limestone palette, producing twelve unique and different crus (localities), expressing a strong identity in the winesthat has stood the test of time. This is how the wines of our Domaine Rolly Gassmann, fruit of this diversity of soils, are the most beautiful expression of the symbiosis of ancestral knowledge, linked to the roots of the terroirs.
